When You See the Problem, Be the Solution
By The Quiet Leader
In the military, young leaders are taught a simple truth:
“If you walk by something substandard, and you do nothing, it becomes the new standard.”
This isn’t a new or even a military-only idea. History is full of people — inventors, philosophers, entrepreneurs, activists — who saw a problem and refused to walk by in silence.
Leadership doesn’t require a title.
It doesn’t need a grand stage or formal authority.
Sometimes, it begins with something far simpler: seeing a problem — and deciding not to wait for someone else to solve it.
That’s what struck me this week as I read about Mossy Earth — a grassroots environmental organization that began in 2017 with little more than a €300 investment and two people who refused to stand by while wildfires devastated Portugal’s forests.
Instead of waiting for government programs or large NGOs, they took action — planting native trees, learning through trial and error, and eventually expanding into rewilding efforts across Europe and beyond.
Today, Mossy Earth works on projects that restore habitats, reintroduce species, and rebuild ecosystems — proof that even small acts of leadership can ripple outward and create real impact.
Their story isn’t just about environmental restoration — it’s about leadership at its most fundamental level:
recognizing a need, stepping up, and moving forward with purpose.
And this kind of leadership is needed everywhere today.
In our communities.
In our politics.
In our institutions.
Too many people see problems — injustice, division, complacency — and convince themselves that it’s not their place to lead.
They wait for permission.
They wait for someone else to take the first step.
But leadership — real leadership — often means being the one who starts:
✅ Even when it’s uncomfortable.
✅ Even when the odds aren’t certain.
✅ Even when you don’t have all the answers yet.
You don’t need a title to lead.
You don’t need perfect conditions to begin.
You only need conviction — and the courage to act.
If two people with €300 can begin restoring the natural world, what could each of us do if we stopped waiting… and started leading — right where we are?
Be the one who steps forward.
Be the one who leads.
